My Journey from Absolute Sound to Custom Home Automation
Crafting a Smart Home Technology System with a Personal Touch
As I get close to the ten year mark with Ted Hollander Designs, it’s hard not to get a little nostalgic about how I made it here.
If you’re an Orlando native or long-time client, you may remember how it all started. For those just learning about us or that haven’t kept up over the years, here’s a little recap.
My work in the smart home technology industry–particularly the AV part of it–began with Absolute Sound almost forty years ago when I joined the company in 1980.
At the time, the company was divided in two different sections. There was the general retail operation and the installation department called Absolute Sound & Design, which I took charge of when I first joined the company.
While the retail store retained its own salesmen and installers, I was able to create my own team dedicated to custom jobs, new constructions, or remodels. Any large or long-term projects were sent over to my team.
When the retail side of the business struggled to make it through the 2008 recession, I had a big decision to make. We had no choice but to close that initial business down, but I also didn’t want to leave my loyal clients out in the cold with incomplete projects.
With my small team, I was able to close out the projects we had on the books for Absolute Sound & Design. Then I decided to keep moving forward with some of my former installers and create Ted Hollander Designs.
We’ve successfully kept that operation going since 2010, focusing on high-end smart home technology projects.

What “Smart” Means for Your Technology
Today, more and more devices are claiming to be smart. From your thermostat to your washing machine, your refrigerator to your lighting system — all these devices can connect to each other to simplify your lifestyle.
As you can imagine, as more and more technology becomes part of our everyday lives there’s a greater need to define the devices and systems we use every day and exclude the ones we don’t need. That’s why you need to customize your smart technology to your needs. That’s where we come in!
How to Customize it To Your Needs
As more smart devices emerge, the key is getting all of them to work together. We work with companies like Crestron to create one-touch solutions that are easy for clients to use. We also work with you to include only the technology you want and offer a variety of control options to find the one that makes the most sense for you.
For instance, one touch on an automated theater system can dim the lights, lower the shades, lock the door, turn on your projector, raise the volume on your AV receiver, and bring you directly to your content selection screen. Whatever you need it to do, we can customize a smart home technology solution to fit your lifestyle.
The same goes for all the technology in your home. There are plenty of ways to customize the systems to make theme easy and fun for you to use — and Ted Hollander Designs is here to help you stay up to date with the latest technology updates.
We also partner with architects, designers, and builders throughout the area to help them add smart technology solutions to their upcoming projects.
